Slovenia continues erecting border razor fence amid climbing tension
Xinhua, November 14, 2015 Adjust font size:
Slovenia continued to construct a razor wire fence on the border with Croatia Friday, said a senior official from the Slovenian Interior Ministry.
By the end of Friday, the 12 to 14 km long fence along multiple sections of border will have been put up.
Razor fences have already been built around some of the major entry points for refugees, including Gibina in north-eastern Slovenia and Rigonce, which used to be the main entry point for refugees coming from Croatia on foot.
Work is now ongoing at Sredisce ob Dravi, a crossing south of Gibina, and several smaller crossings near Rigonce in the broader Brezice area, a report by Slovenian Press Agency (STA) quoted Interior Ministry State Secretary Bostjan Sefic as saying.
There have been tensions with Croatia over the fence at Rigonce, which Croatia claims has been put up on its territory. Slovenia emphasized the fence line in no way prejudges the border.
Slovenia's Interior Secretary of State Bostjan Sefic said: "The fence is being built not on the borderline but where the terrain is best. We avoided all points about which Croatia's disagreement could be justified."
While Croatia had initially threatened to remove the disputed parts of the fence, it appears, the government has changed its mind, the STA report said.
Croatian Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic said on Friday Croatia would not react to "Slovenia's provocation." Endit
