S. African police fire stun grenades at protesters outside parliament

South African police on Wednesday fired stun grenades at workers protesting over employment conditions outside parliament.

Police scuffled with protesters who refused to leave the area.

Witnesses said 12 stun grenades were fired. There was no immediate report of injuries.

The protesters vowed to disrupt sittings of parliamentary committees if their demands were not met.

Hundreds of members of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union have been protesting outside parliament since last Friday.

They are demanding better pay and pension benefits, an end to outsourcing of services at the legislature, and that the parliament abandon the process of re- vetting all staff for security purposes.

Members of parliament have expressed concerns over their safety. Endit
