Helmut Schmidt, who served as chancellor of West Germany from 1974 to 1982, died at age 96 at his home in Hamburg on Tuesday, according to German media.

WASHINGTON -- At least two people were killed after a private jet crashed Tuesday afternoon in Akron, Ohio, local media said.

Citing officials from the local police and fire department, the TV network CBS News reported that the pilot and co-pilot were dead in the incident which happened around 3 p.m. local time. (US-Plane Crash)

PARIS -- Iran's President Hassan Rouhani would pay a state visit to Paris next week in a bid to inject fresh blood into bilateral cooperation after a concluded nuclear deal which opened Teheran's doors to westerners, French President Francois Hollande announced Tuesday.

During Rouhani visit on Nov. 17, "several accords will be signed by French and Iranian ministers covering a variety of sectors, in particular political dialogue, economic cooperation, air transport, health and agriculture," the Elysee said in a statement. (France-Iran-Visit)

DAMASCUS -- Syrian military forces on Tuesday have managed to break up years of besiege on a northern airbase after intense battles against the Islamic State (IS) militant group, a military source told Xinhua.

The army units broke the siege and reached the trapped soldiers in military housing units, a military academy and the Kweiris airbase, which has been besieged by the IS militants and other rebel groups in the eastern countryside of the northern province of Aleppo, the source said on condition of anonymity.
