A Chinese envoy to the United Nations on Tuesday called on various ethnic groups in Bosnia and Herzegovina to continue to consolidate the achievements in nation-building and comprehensively implement the Dayton peace accord.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Dayton Peace Accord. Liu Jieyi, China's permanent representative to the UN, welcomed the fact that "Bosnia and Herzegovina has maintained stability and achieved positive progress in economic development and rule of law."
"The international community should seize this opportunity, to prompt various ethnic groups in Bosnia and Herzegovina to continue to consolidate the achievement in nation building and continue to comprehensively implement the peace accord," said Liu at a Security Council meeting.
Maintaining the peace and stability, promoting economic and social development and realizing the harmonious co-existence of all ethnic groups in Bosnia and Herzegovina are in the common interest of the countries and regions and the entire international community, said Liu.
He pointed out that China always respects the independence, sovereignty, national unity and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and believes that Bosnia and Herzegovina should autonomously choose its own development path and foreign policy.
"The international community should respect and support the choice made by the government and people of Bosnia and Herzegovina," he added.
"China welcomes the adoption of the council resolution 2247 on Tuesday, extending the mandate of the EUFOR ALTHEA, (an EU military operation)," said Liu. "We hope that the EUFOR will continue to closely cooperate with Bosnia and Herzegovina and play a constructive role for maintaining peace and stability of the country.
China is prepared to join the international community in its ongoing efforts to make its due contribution to the lasting peace, stability and development of Bosnia and Herzegovina, said Liu.
Dayton peace accord was signed in Paris to end three-and-a-half years of war in the Balkans. It creates two entities of roughly equal size, one for Bosnian Muslims and Croats, the other for Serbs. Endit
