2 Palestinians dead after fresh slew of attacks in Jerusalem, West Bank

Xinhua, November 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

A Palestinian man was shot and killed by Israeli border guards after allegedly trying to stab them on Tuesday afternoon, the Israeli police said.

The Palestinian arrived at the Kiosk checkpoint near Bethlehem in the West Bank on Tuesday afternoon and arose the suspicion of border guards, a police spokesperson said.

The guards ordered the man to stop for an examination and he then pulled a knife and ran towards them. The guards shot at him and paramedics pronounced his death at the scene.

Earlier in Tuesday, two attacks took place against Israelis in east Jerusalem, one at the Pisgat Zev neighborhood, and another at the Nablus Gate at the entrance to Jerusalem's Old City.

Two Palestinian teens stabbed a border guard near a light rail station in Pisgat Zev, wounding him moderately. He managed to shoot and seriously wound one of them, while the police arrested the other perpetrator.

In the Nablus Gate attack, which took place several minutes afterwards, a 37-year-old Palestinian from the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Issawiya allegedly tried to stab Israeli border police guards.

The guards shot at him and wounded him critically, and the Hadassah Har Hatzofim hospital in Jerusalem announced his death a short while after his hospitalization.

The current wave of weeks-long violence between Israelis and Palestinians was sparked following controversy over the al-Aqsa compound in east Jerusalem, holy to both Jews and Muslims, and quickly escalated into violent attacks and clashes between Israelis and Palestinians throughout Israel and in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza Strip territories.

Twelve Israelis were killed in lone wolf attacks by Palestinians in the form of stabbing, shooting and vehicular attacks since the beginning of October.

According to the Palestinian health ministry, more than 80 Palestinians have died, some in clashes with security forces during protests, while others gunned down by security forces and vigilante citizens after allegedly trying to carry out attacks against Israelis. Enditem
