Nigeria begins training for World Cup 2018 qualifier

Xinhua, November 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

Nigeria's Super Eagles will begin training on Tuesday in preparation for Friday's first-leg second round fixture in Lobamba for their FIFA World Cup 2018 qualifier against Swaziland.

Toyin Ibitoye, Super Eagles Media Officer, who disclosed this in Abuja, the nation's capital city, said the decision to begin training on Tuesday followed the slow pace of players' arrival.

Ibitoye said only the goalkeepers trained on Monday, as there were only eight players in camp as at 4 pm, local time.

They are Wolverhampton Wanderers of England goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme, Sunshine Stars' Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Dele Alampasu based in Portugal.

Other players are Chima Akas, Austin Oboroakpo, Paul Onobi, Jamiu Alimi of Shooting Stars and Watford striker Odion Ighalo.

The spokesperson said Alimi replaced injured FSV Mainz defender Leon Balogun.

"We are expecting others to arrive; you know they played league games yesterday (Sunday), so, they are expected to come one by one today (Monday)," he added.

"All the coaches, including Sunday Oliseh, are already in camp but the training will commence fully Tuesday evening," Ibitoye told reporters.

According to him, the team would depart the country on Thursday morning on board a chartered flight.

Oliseh had invited 23 players to camp including Seattle Sounders FC striker Obafemi Martins for the encounter against Swaziland. Endit
