Nearly 300 tourists from Latvia who had traveled to Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on airBaltic flights have been brought home on two special flights organized by the carrier, Latvian foreign ministry informed on Monday.
Meanwhile, 155 Latvian holidaymakers still remain in Sharm el-Sheikh and 170 in Hurghada, the ministry said, adding that these are clients of GoAdventure tour operator who flew to Egypt on AirCairo flights.
GoAdventure assured the foreign ministry that all the travelers were safe and provided with free lodging in local hotels. The tour operator plans to arrange their return to Latvia on Tuesday.
Last Friday, the Latvian Civil Aviation Agency imposed an indefinite ban on flights to Sharm el-Sheikh and Latvia's airBaltic national carrier suspended flights to this destination because of security concerns.
Like many other countries, Latvia is taking the precautions after Russia's Airbus A-321 jetliner with 224 people onboard crashed in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on October 31 in what many suspect was a terror attack. Endit
