Jordan urges int'l community to increase aid for Syrian refugees

King Abdullah II of Jordan on Sunday called on the international community to increase aid to Jordan to be able to deal with an increasing number of Syrian refugees, the state-run Petra news agency reported.

At a meeting with Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg, the King said Jordan is in need of increased aid to be able to continue to provide services to the Syrian refugees, whose number exceeds 1.5 million in the kingdom.

Jordan also voiced appreciation to Norway's aid that helps the kingdom provide relief services to the Syrian refugees.

Official figures by the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation indicate that the direct cost of Syrian refugees on Jordan's economy is about 1.1 billion U.S. dollars.

On developments in Syria, the King urged more efforts to end the violence in Syria through political solution that preserves the country's unity and stability.

The Norwegian official voiced appreciation of Jordan's efforts in this regard and stressed on the key role Jordan plays in the security and stability in the Middle East. Endit
