U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has taken additional security measures in less than ten airports in the Sinai Peninsula region, White House said Friday.
"These steps are being taken in airport facilities where the United States already has a cooperative relationship with the airport authorities," White House spokesman Josh Earnest said during a daily press briefing.
Earnest said the measures will boost security procedures already in place "to ensure the safety of Americans who may be traveling overseas."
The measures taken include "expanded screening," "updated airport assessments" and "other forms of assistance that the United States can provide to airport authorities" to better secure airport facilities, Earnest said.
The Airbus A-321 operated by Russian airline Kogalymavia crashed early Saturday in the Sinai Peninsula shortly after taking off from Egypt's Red Sea resort Sharm el-Sheikh. All 224 people onboard were killed. Endit
