UNHCR anticipates 600,000 new arrivals from Turkey by end of February 2016

Xinhua, November 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

UN refugee agency UNHCR on Friday predicted that people will continue to arrive in Europe via the Mediterranean from Turkey at the rate of 5,000 per day in the coming four month, meaning that new arrivals will reach 600,000 by the end of February 2016.

With thousands of refugees and migrants continuing to arrive in Europe as winter approaches, UNHCR is currently appealing to donors for 96.15 million U.S. dollars in additional support for Greece and affected countries in the Balkans.

According to UNHCR, the most pressing needs were winter clothes, blankets and other winter supplies, to upgrade and improve the existing reception centres, provide emergency winterized shelter, provide transport to those unable to walk, and support the volunteers providing welcome, support and shelter to refugees arriving at the Greek islands.

"Harsh weather conditions are likely to exacerbate the suffering of the thousands of refugees and migrants landing in Greece and travelling through the Balkans, and may result in further loss of life if adequate measures are not taken urgently," UNHCR spokesperson William Spindler said. Endit
