Bahrain arrests 47 terror suspects, says backed by Iran

Xinhua, November 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

Bahrain's security authorities have in a major counterterrorism operation arrested a total of 47 people who are believe to have links to terror outfits in Iran, official sources said on Wednesday.

According to the authorities, they also seized many high-grade explosives, bomb making materials and weapons from several locations within populated residential areas, and discovered a bomb-making facility and an explosive laboratory.

"Among the seizures were homemade bombs and raw bomb-making materials, including C4, TATP, Urea Nitrate, and Nitro Cellulose," said a statement posted on Bahrain News Agency.

"Ammunition and anti-personnel bomb molds were also seized along with partially constructed armor-piercing explosive devices, which were likely to be used as Vehicle-Improvised Explosive Devices (VIEDs)," said the statement.

The Interior Ministry said the arrests disrupted a number of terrorist attacks planned for the near future.

The investigation and several surveillance operations revealed that, as with previous terrorist incidents this year, the suspects detained hold strong connections with terrorist organizations in Iran.

" Over the past six months multiple seizures of explosives, homemade IED and VIEDs, bomb-manufacturing equipment and caches of arms and ammunition have been directly linked to Iranian-backed extremists who intended to use the materials in terror attacks in Bahrain," said the statement.

The Chief of Public Security Major General Tariq Al Hassan last week during a high level summit held in Manama stated they discovered around 450 improvised explosive devices since 2012 with links to Iran. However, Iran denies involvement in any violence in Bahrain. Endit
