A suspect was fatally shot by police after he stabbed and wounded five people on the campus of the University of California(UC) at Merced on Wednesday morning.

Two of the victims were flown to local hospitals and the others treated on scene, according to local media reports.

The suspect was described as a male student in his 20s. Authorities are investigating the motivation of the suspect.

The incident occurred in the Classroom and Office Building of the school. An alert was put on Twitter by school authorities shortly after 8 a.m. local time (1600 GMT), advising students to avoid the area.

Classes were canceled and the campus, with about 6,700 students enrolled, closed for the day. Enditem
