LNG from Poland could lead to cuts in price of Russian gas in Slovakia: analyst

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Poland might lead to falls in the price of Russian gas, announced Slovak energy analyst Jozef Badida on Tuesday.
The construction of an LNG terminal station and the signing of a long-term contract for purchasing Qatari gas will lower Poland's dependency on a single gas supplier, Russia's Gazprom, but could still be expensive for Poland, the analyst said.
"It appears that the management of this terminal is an expensive thing when compared to similar infrastructure in Belgium and the Netherlands, but it might become cheaper in the long term via the selling of gas to foreign customers, which also includes those from Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Ukraine," explained the analyst.
"In the next few years, the transport capacity of pipelines in the direction of the Czech Republic and Ukraine should increase, and so the whole central European region will be able to buy and transport LNG from Poland. This alternative might lead to drops in the prices of Russian gas supplies to individual countries, including Slovakia," added Badida.
The first tanker of Qatari LNG will arrive at the Polish harbour of Swinoujscie mid-December. Endit
