The Arab League (AL) and the European Union (EU) signed Tuesday a cooperation protocol to boost the capabilities of the AL in confronting crisis.

The agreement was signed by AL Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi and EU's foreign policy Chief Federica Mogherini at the AL headquarters in Cairo.

"This is a very important day... the Arab League and the EU cooperates in many fields; economic field, political field and media field," al-Arabi told reporters during a joint press conference.

Al-Arabi also pointed out that a new stage of relationships has already started between the EU and the AL after signing this protocol, praising the EU's balanced role in the international public relations.

For her part, Mogherini said that she is very proud of the partnership and cooperation the EU has established with the AL.

The EU and the AL are complementary to each other, he said, stressing that the level of mutual cooperation is extremely high and important.

Meanwhile, Mogherini also said that the EU is working hard to reach a settlement to the Syrian issue that maintains its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
