Slovakia helps Slovenia with border protection

Xinhua, November 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

A group of 20 Slovak police officers will be despatched to Slovenia to help protect its borders, decided the Slovak Government at an extraordinary session on Tuesday.

Slovakia is responding to an official request addressed to the Visegrad Four group, including the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia, by Slovenian Interior Minister Vesna Gyorkos Znidar. The Slovak police unit will be tasked with patrolling the external Schengen border with Croatia as well as with maintaining public order within the country.

"However, their mandate will be slightly different than in Hungary. There, our police officers form part of mixed patrols that monitor and protect the border. In the case of Slovenia, it will not only be about monitoring the Slovenian-Croatian border but, with respect to the influx of migrants, also about maintaining public order in the country," explained Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, adding that if Ljubljana were to ask for more than 20 police officers, Slovakia would oblige.

In the face of a rising influx of migrants, the situation in Slovenia is critical. Over 50,000 migrants crossed the Slovenian-Croatian border between Oct. 16-25. Enditem
