Ukraine' s top prosecutor unhurt after apparent assassination attempt

Xinhua, November 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Ukrainian Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin escaped an apparent assassination attempt when his office was attacked by sniper late Monday, the country' s chief military prosecutor Anatoly Matios said Tuesday.

"Yesterday, at about 9:52 p.m. local time (GMT 1952), the Prosecutor General and his colleagues, who were at a meeting in the prosecutor general's office, came under sniper fire," Matios told a press briefing.

The gunman fired several shots through the window of the prosecutor's office, but the bullets were blocked by the bulletproof glass, Matios said.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack. And the Ukrainian Security Service has launched a criminal investigation into the case.

Shokin, 62, was appointed Ukraine' s Prosecutor General in February this year. In recent weeks, he has been widely criticized for lack of progress in investigating high-level corruption cases. Endi
