A refugee camp for 300 people sitting idle in an unused prison in Breclav-Postorna is being dismantled on Monday, announced mayor Pavel Dominik.
The Czech Interior Ministry built the camp with the expectation that a large influx of refugees would arrive in the country in early September 2015 but the camp was not used.
The camp consisted of building cells and tents for 300 refugees. Everything should be gone by Thursday evening, said Dominik. Hana Mala from the press department of the Czech Interior Ministry said most things would return to the warehouse of the firefighters' corps.
The Czech administration of refugee facilities transported portable cabins from the fenced complex of the prison on Monday. On Wednesday and Thursday, about 90 firefighters will come with equipment to take away the tents.
The complex is soon to be used as a prison for 200 convicts.
The complex formerly served as a shelter for refugees detained at the nearby borders with Slovakia and Austria in the 1990s but stood vacant for many years. It was later taken over by the Czech prison service and was repurposed into a detention facility. Endit
