EU to give 28 mln euros in humanitarian aid to Jordan

Xinhua, November 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

The European Commission here on Sunday announced that it will give 28 million euros in humanitarian aid to support Syrians displaced by the conflict in their host communities in Jordan.

According to a Commission press release, the funding allocation was announced by European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Christos Stylianides, who is currently on a visit to Jordan and Lebanon.

Stylianides said that the coming winter will bring additional hardship to the most vulnerable Syrian refugees in Jordan, so the European Union (EU) side was stepping up its humanitarian aid.

"The funding will help cover basic needs of refugees and host communities such as health care, clean water, shelter, rent and education," he said.

On his visit, the Commissioner will discuss the growing needs of Syrian refugees with government officials and humanitarian partner organizations in Jordan, visit refugee camps and see the humanitarian situation first hand.

The funding allocation freshly announced concerns the 200 million euros of additional humanitarian aid for 2015 proposed by the Commission in September to provide immediate resources to respond to demands from UNHCR and the World Food Program and other relevant organizations in order to help refugees immediately.
