Exchange Fund assets up 7.01 bln USD

At the end of September, Hong Kong's Exchange Fund's total assets was 54.4 billion HK dollars (about 7.01 billion U.S. dollars) higher than at the end of August, standing at 3.2935 trillion HK dollars, the Monetary Authority announced on Friday.

Foreign currency assets rose 59.3 billion HK dollars, while Hong Kong dollar assets fell 4.9 billion HK dollars.

The Monetary Base at the end of September was 1.4832 trillion HK dollars, up 60.1 billion HK dollars from the previous month, due to an increase in the balance of the banking system.

The amount of Backing Assets increased 62 billion HK dollars to 1.5859 trillion HK dollars, due to the purchase of U.S. dollars under the currency board system. The backing ratio decreased to 106.92 percent at the end of September from 107.08 percent a month earlier. (1 U.S. dollar = 7.75 HK dollars) Endit
