Blast wounds 6 policemen in Egypt's Sinai

Xinhua, October 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

Six Egyptian policemen were wounded in a blast that targeted their vehicle on a highway in Arish city of restive North Sinai province on Thursday, a security source said.

"The vehicle was moving on Arish-Qantara international highway near the city entrance when it was targeted by an explosive device, leaving five police recruits and a non-commissioned officer injured," the source added.

Last week also in Arish, three policemen were killed and eight others wounded in a blast that targeted their armored vehicle.

The assailants are expected to belong to the Sinai-based Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis militant group, which has changed its name to "Sinai State" and declared loyalty to the IS.

Egypt has been suffering militant attacks that have killed hundreds of police and military men since former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi was ousted in July 2013.

The armed forces and the police have recently launched a massive anti-terrorist campaign in North Sinai, killing over 600 militants and arresting hundreds of suspects.

The campaign is part of the country's "war against terrorism" that was declared by the current military-oriented leadership after Morsi's removal. Endit
