Voting process starts in Nepal to elect new president

Nepal's first presidential election after the promulgation of new constitution began on Wednesday morning.

The voting process in the Legislature Parliament began at 11 a.m. local time and will continue for four hours.

CPN UML Vice-chairwoman Bidhya Devi Bhandari and Nepali Congress leader Kul Bahadur Gurung are in the fray for the post of second President of the federal democratic republic Nepal.

This is the first time in the history of Nepal to have any woman leader filing candidacy for the post of president. They had filed their candidacy for the post of state head on Tuesday.

Bhandari, 54, is backed by third largest party Unified CPN Maoist, Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal and other ruling parties, keeping the possibility high for her victory. While Gurung has not received any promise of support from other political parties.

According to Parliament secretariat, the secret ballot counting would begin from 2 pm and the results will be out by the evening.

Nepal had elected the new Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Oct. 11 right after the promulgation of new constitution on Sept. 20. Enditem.
