Myanmar's election commission urges election campaigning under law

Xinhua, October 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Myanmar's Union Election Commission has urged political parties and candidates to oversee their campaigns for the upcoming general election in accordance with law in order to prevent conflicts, an official media reported Tuesday.

In wake of increasing tempo of political campaign for the general election set for Nov. 8, a statement of the commission warned of causing possible conflicts due to confrontation.

"Political campaign need to be kept under special supervision by political parties and candidates in order to prevent unnecessary events impacting members of the parties and their supporters," stressed the statement.

The statement warned that campaigns that are not in conformity with the law will be banned with legal action to be taken.

Election campaigning by political parties and candidates have been in full swing since it started on Sept. 8 and is set to end on Nov. 6, two days before the election day.

A total of 6,065 candidates involving 91 political parties and 310 independent runners will compete for seats in parliament in the upcoming general election.

The commission designated 1,163 constituencies for the vote at four levels of the parliament across the country, namely the House of Representatives (Lower House), the House of Nationalities (Upper House), the Region or State Parliament and ethnic representatives.

There are 35 million eligible voters in the country, according to the commission.

The government has also prepared to deploy 40,000 specially-trained police force nationwide to guard the polling on the election day. Enditem
