Xinhua, October 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III approved Monday a law that will pave the way for Filipino job-seekers, especially those in rural areas, to find better employment opportunities in the country.

Aquino signed the amendments to Republic Act No. 8759 or the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) Act of 1991, which provides information and assistance to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) clients and constituents of local government units (LGUs).

The amended law, also known as RA 10691, defines the role of DOLE, LGUs, and accredited non-government organizations in the establishment and operation of job placement offices all over the country.

RA 10691 mandates for the sure funding for 1,925 PESOs nationwide.

The funding for the operation and maintenance of the PESOs shall be provided by the LGUs from their internal revenue allotment and their other internally generated income.

The national government is also mandated to include in its annual budget funding for the PESOs.

Aquino expressed hope that with the signing of the law, unemployment rate in the country, which was at 6.6 percent in 2014, could further fall. Endit
