Bomb attack kills 2 in Egypt's North Sinai

Xinhua, October 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

A police officer and a soldier were killed and nine others wounded in a bomb attack on Saturday in al-Arish city of Egypt's North Sinai, the state-run MENA news agency reported.

A bomb planted on the Ring Road in al-Arish city struck an armored vehicle, a security official was quoted by MENA as saying.

The blast site was cordoned off and investigation was underway.

A similar attack on Friday in al-Arish killed a policeman and wounded three others.

Egypt has been mired in violence that killed hundreds of police and soldiers since the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi by the army in July 2013 following mass protests against his one-year rule.

Most of the attacks were claimed by Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis militant group, which changed its name to "Sinai State" and declared loyalty to the Islamic State.

Egypt has killed over 600 militants and arrested hundreds of others in recent operations in North Sinai as part of the country's "war against terrorism" declared by President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi. Endit
