Several people arrested in Maldives following VP's arrest

Xinhua, October 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least four people have been arrested by the Maldives Police on Saturday for attempts to create unrest in capital Male following the arrest of Vice President Ahmed Adheeb earlier in the day.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdulla Nawaz told journalists in a media briefing that Adheeb had been arrested in relation to the investigation of an explosion on board the presidential yacht last month.

When questioned by journalists about the evidence against the vice president, Nawaz said that evidence would be submitted to court and if that evidence was released to the public, it would impede the investigation.

Nawaz said that the police would also maintain law and order and would not allow the disruption of peace in Male.

He further said that four people had been arrested following the information about creating unrest in Male but added that those numbers could be higher.

The police arrested Adheeb on Saturday morning upon his arrival at the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport from Singapore over his alleged involvement in the explosion on the presidential yacht last month which was later seen as an assassination attempt on President Abdulla Yameen.

Home Minister Umar Naseer in a twitter message confirmed the arrest and said that Adheeb had been arrested on charges of 'high treason' and taken to the police detention centre in Dhoonidhoo.

On Friday, President Yameen fired his police commissioner Hussain Waheed and appointed him as the State Housing Minister while his two deputies Hassan Habib and Mohamed Sodiq had been transferred to the gender ministry and housing ministry respectively.

Waheed is said to have had close ties with Adheeb, local media reports said.

The President escaped unhurt in the explosion on Sept. 28, but the first lady and two other security officials sustained serious injuries when the blast ripped through part of the president yacht. Enditem
