Fijian PM congratulates Canada's Trudeau on election

Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has sent a congratulatory message to his newly-elected Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau, the Fijian government announced Saturday.

The Fijian government has followed the campaign with great interest particularly in the areas of peacekeeping and global climate change, Bainimarama said in the message, according to Fiji's Department of Information.

"On that note, Fiji wholeheartedly welcomes your commitment to increase Canada's involvement in international peacekeeping and strengthening its efforts to tackle the cataclysmic effects of climate change," Bainimarama said.

"Aside from these two global pressing issues, Fiji looks forward to strengthening its relations with Canada, in areas such as trade and investments, tourism, sports - particularly rugby, and people-to-people exchanges," he said.

The Fijian prime minister also used the opportunity to support the efforts to rejuvenate Fiji's relations and bring Fiji closer to work with its diaspora communities in Canada.

Trudeau is set to become the new Canadian prime minister after his Liberal Party won a landslide victory in Monday's federal elections. Enditem
