Portuguese opposition Socialists say they're ready to form new gov't

Xinhua, October 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

Portugal's Socialist Party (PS) is ready to form a new government, PS leader Antonio Costa said after meeting President Anibal Cavaco Silva Tuesday.

Costa told reporters at the Belem Palace that a decision is in place. "What we conveyed to the president was that we believe that there is every condition necessary for the Socialist Party to form a government that holds majority backing in parliament and thus ensures the conditions necessary for national stability," Costa said.

An agreement has been made between the PS, the Left Block and the Communist Party. "The conditions for the PS to form a government with majority support are in place," said Costa.

Meanwhile, the nation is waiting for President Silva's decision to appoint a new prime minister.

Referring to the president's decision to appoint a prime minister, Costa said, "The country gets nothing in prolonging a situation of uncertainty."

Since the Oct. 4 election, Portugal's parties have been locked in talks to form a coalition government. Endi
