Bombs toppled power towers in S. Philippines

Xinhua, October 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

Two power towers of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines were toppled down by improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the south Philippine province of North Cotabato Friday night, authorities said on Saturday.

Jo-ann Petinglay, public affairs officer of the Army's 6th Infantry Division, said the incident happened at 11:40 p.m. (1540 GMT) when towers No. 44 and No. 45 located in Barangay Batulawan of Pikit Town were toppled down by the bombs.

According to Petinglay, an initial investigation revealed the IEDs, composed of 60mm mortars as the main charge, were manually detonated due to the presence of a 250-meter firing wire in one of the towers.

In addition, an unexploded IED was also found to be placed 10 meters above the ground in one of the foot of tower number 45.

The incident caused a three-hour power outrage in part of North Cotabato and Maguindanao.

Earlier this year, another tower collapsed by cellular phone- detonated IEDs, resulting in a 10-hour blackout in some areas of the province.

The Army's 6th Infantry Division has called the incident a terrorist act.

"The Command will not tolerate terroristic activities to thrive in its area of operations as many will be affected by its effects, " said Petinglay. Endi
