Austria to boost border police numbers

Xinhua, October 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

Austria will train a further 200 border police personnel to assist in border control activities in light of the present migration situation, the country's interior ministry said Wednesday.

The training is to begin from Jan. 1, 2016 with the personnel ready to begin their duty by mid-2016.

The interior ministry said the temporary border controls initiated on Sept. 16 were in response to similar measures first implemented by Germany, the target country for most of the recent migrant wave passing through Austria.

There are currently 38 border watch posts and 33 border control stations manned by 3,000 personnel.

The border personnel can later take on additional training in order to become regular police officers, it added. Endit
