Nearly 200,000 migrants passed through Austria in September: ministry

Xinhua, October 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

Almost 200,000 migrants have passed through Austria in September, the Ministry of the Interior said on Wednesday.

The APA news agency quoted a ministry spokesperson as saying that more precise figures are difficult to gauge, as while numbers were counted at major contact points, it is uncertain how many travelled directly through the country on trains.

The majority had travelled through to Germany, and the German government also reported Wednesday that 164,000 asylum seekers arrived in the country last month.

The Austrian Interior Ministry said about 10,000 people also submitted an asylum application.

The number of migrants coming into Austria is at present showing no particular signs of slowing down, with 6,250 reportedly having slept in emergency quarters on Tuesday night, while a further 980 were found at gathering points or train stations Wednesday morning, according to authorities. Endit
