Denmark sets aside millions for refugees

Xinhua, October 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Danish government has allocated 325 million Danish kroner (49 million U.S. dollars) to support the country's municipalities in handling the increase of refugees.

A total of 125 million kroner of the grant will be used for the expansion of the housing capacity, while the remaining 200 million kroner have been set aside for integration of the refugees, the Danish ministry of social affairs and the interior announced on Tuesday.

"We are in an extraordinary situation, and that requires a special short-term effort by the municipalities to provide housing and to get the refugees into school and jobs," said Karen Ellemann, Danish social affairs minister, in an official statement.

"We will also continuously follow the development in the area. Specifically, we will now together with the local government association KL look at the possibilities for further simplifying integration rules and give the general finances in the area an overhaul," she added. Funds will be distributed to the municipalities based on their refugee quotas for 2015 and 2016. Endit
