The European Commission here on Tuesday said that the overall pre-accession support for migration-related activities, both past and planned, amounted to 469 million euros (528 million U.S. dollars).
The Commission said in a fact sheet that the funding was and would be done through the Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance (IPA).
Funding from IPA in the area of home affairs is increasing from 130 million euros over 2011-2013 to an indicative allocation of 245 million euros for the period 2014-2016.
Another 94 million euros of IPA has also been mobilized to assist Turkey in coping with the influx of Syrian migrants, which made European Union total assistance for this purpose in Turkey amounting to over 175 million euros.
The bulk of the pre-accession support for migration-related activities goes to areas including efforts for integrated border management, support the construction of removal centers for illegal migrants and reception centers for asylum seekers, support to the international protection system, and support to anti-trafficking of human beings.
"As part of EU's efforts to step up the support to its neighbors in managing the refugee crisis the funding for Turkey could reach up to one billion euros, if Turkey wants and agrees," the EU said, noting that the funds can come from reallocation from various funding sources.
The fact sheet added that pre-accession support for migration-related activities in the Western Balkans and Turkey since 2007 amounts to over 600 million euros. (1 euro=1.13 U.S. dollars) Endit
