Accidental grenade explosion leaves militant leader dead in Bangladesh

Xinhua, October 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

A regional militant leader of the banned Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) was killed and three policemen were injured in a grenade explosion early Tuesday in Bangladesh's southeastern seaport city Chittagong, some 242 km away of capital Dhaka.

"Md Javed, 26, was killed when a grenade went off accidentally during a search operation," said Kushum Dewan, deputy commissioner of Detective Branch of Chittagong Metropolitan Police.

Three policemen were also injured in the accident, he said.

The Detective Branch of Bangladesh Police Monday arrested five including Javed from southeastern seaport city Chittagong.

According to the official, a team of detectives conducted the search operation with Javed in a place in Chittagong to recover more firearms and ammunition.

"Javed was critically injured in the grenade explosion. He was rushed to hospital where doctors declared him dead."

JMB, campaigning for establishment of Islamic rule in Bangladesh, carried out a series of bombings in 63 out of the country's 64 districts, including the capital of Dhaka on Aug. 17, 2005, leaving two people dead and 150 others injured.

Hundreds of JMB leaders and activists were rounded up while six top leaders of the group, including Shaikh Abdur Rahman, were hanged in 2007. Endi
