Brazil on Monday signed agreement with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to facilitate access to special visas for Syrian refugees to enter the country.
According to the Brazilian Ministry of Justice, the deal aims at defining joint procedures to help Brazil's consulates and embassies quickly process special refugee visas.
"Our doors-open policy was recently renewed for two more years, and we continue to seek new ways of improving its implementation," said Beto Vasconcelos, head of the Brazilian National Committee for Refugees (Conare).
The new procedures will be first executed in Brazil's embassies and consulates in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.
In September, Brazil renewed for two years a grant of special visas to Syrians wishing to take asylum in the country.
There are currently over 8,500 refugees in Brazil, among whom some 2,100 are from Syria. Endit
