Modi pitches for "Make in India" initiative at Indo-German summit

Xinhua, October 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday made a pitch for his two ambitious initiatives - " Make in India" and "Digital India" - at the Indo-German Summit that he held with visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the southern city of Bengaluru.

"We are on the path of making India a global manufacturing hub. There is tremendous potential in India-Germany economic relationship. The Indo-German economic relations remain below its full potential. We are working hard to create conducive conditions for business," Modi said.

Claiming that the government has worked hard to make the country a favorable place to set up business, he said: "At a time of a global slowdown, India represents a bright spot for investments. We need to provide a huge push to manufacturing. That 's why we launched Make in India."

Modi said his government has fast-tracked clearances for industry and infrastructure. "We have taken very decisive steps to remove a number of long pending concerns of investors. Such a huge potential for creation and production will not be available in any one country."

On his "Digital India" initiative, the prime minister said the country is on the threshold of a big information technology revolution "where technology will be leveraged to meet aspirations of 1.25 billion citizens."

"Never before was India so well-prepared to absorb talent, technology and investment from outside," he added.

Earlier in the day, both Modi and Merkel, who were in Bengaluru to attend the summit, visited the plant of German automotive giant Bosch in the southern city and interacted with its executives on innovation and research. Endi
