New ministers take office in Brazil

Xinhua, October 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

Ten new ministers took office in Brazil on Monday with the presence of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.

The president called for dedication from the new team. "I recommend a lot of dedication, because we have to govern Brazil until 2018," Rousseff said at the swearing-in ceremony.

Rousseff unveiled a cabinet reshuffle on Friday and reduced the number of ministries from 39 to 31, mainly by merging several smaller ministries into larger ones. The salaries of the president, vice-president and ministers were also reduced by 10 percent.

The large renovation of the cabinet is a move to ensure governability in Brazil and increase the presence of allied parties in Rousseff's coalition government.

The ministers who took office on Monday included Jaques Wagner (chief of staff), Andre Figueiredo (minister of communications), Heder Barbalho (minister of ports), Celso Pansera (minister of science and technology) and Aldo Rebelo (minister of defense), among others. Endi
