Ethiopian prime minster re-elected in parliament

Ethiopia's parliament on Monday re-elected Hailemariam Desalegn prime minister of the East African country in the inaugural session of the new parliament.

Hailemaraim, having been in power since the death of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi in 2012, is sworn in to serve another five-year term.

Hailemariam is chairperson of the country's ruling party, the Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) that won the majority vote of the elections in May this year.

The inaugural session of the country's parliament, the House of People's Representatives, also re-elected Abadula Gemeda its Speaker and Shitaye Minale, Deputy Speaker of the House.

Following the election of the prime minister and Speakers of the House, Ethiopian President Mulatu Teshome addressed the joint opening session of the House of Peoples' Representatives and the House of Federation.

The president said Ethiopia has registered double digit growth in its recent years, and the second growth and transformation plan over the next five years will play a decisive role in speeding up the transformation of the economy and realize the first half of the vision of becoming a middle income country by 2025.

"The structural transformation, to give industry a significant role in the economy, and promote holistic developments at all levels, will bring changes to the political economy of the country, combating rent-seeking activities and making significant changes in rural areas," he said.

Mulatu said concerted effort would be made to maintain the country's annual growth rate at around 11 percent while making endeavors to put in place a stable and healthy macro-economy. Endit
