UN chief calls for collaboration to improve public spaces for all

Xinhua, October 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday called for collaboration among local authorities, inhabitants and other actors to improve public spaces for all.

In his message on World Habitat Day, Ban said public spaces are crucial for poor and vulnerable citizens because they can provide basic services, enhance connectivity, spawn economic activity and raise property values while generating municipal revenue.

Ban said following the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which includes a goal to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable, the international community has reached consensus that recognizes sustainable urban development as a transformational approach.

In this regard, Ban said he looks forward to working with all partners to enable people everywhere to enjoy public spaces "where we are equal, where our cultures and histories are reflected, and where we can shape a future that is safe and sustainable for all."

World Habitat Day is set aside annually to recognize the basic right of people to adequate shelter, and to encourage grassroots action toward ending poverty housing. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1985 that the first Monday in October would be World Habitat Day. The theme of the day for this year is "Public Spaces for All." Endit
