The World Bank (WB) Group has lifted sanctions it imposed two years ago on a private waste management company in Ghana, local media reported here Monday.
Zoomlion Company Limited (ZLCL), the largest private waste management company, and its affiliates have accordingly been cleared to participate and bid for projects funded by the WB Group.
The WB placed a ban on ZLCL on Sept. 24, 2013, over alleged bribery in Liberia involving its Emergency Monrovia Urban Sanitation Project.
According to a report published on the bank's official website, Zoomlion paid bribes to facilitate contract execution and processing of invoices in Liberia.
Accordingly, the Ghanaian company was banned from any contract financed by the WB for a period of two years.
The bank said Zoomlion needed to demonstrate full and satisfactory compliance with the World Bank Integrity standards for the ban to be lifted.
Communications Manager for Zoomlion Ghana Company Limited Robert Coleman told an Accra-based radio station his outfit was humbled by the decision by the WB Group.
"By this decision, our stakeholders will see how credible we are and also it is a great lesson for us to ensure that nothing of that sort happens again," he said.
The company, established in 2006 with 3000 workers, now has over 85,000 workers.
It currently operates in a number of African countries including Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Liberia, Togo and Zambia while negotiations are underway to commence operations in Sierra Leone and South Sudan. Endit
