Overnight stays in Switzerland drop to 4.1 mln in August

The Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO) indicated Monday that the number of overnight stays registered by the Swiss hotel industry dropped to 4.1 million in August 2015, down 152,000 compared to the same period last year.
Representing a 3.6-percent decrease, total overnight stays generated by both domestic visitors (1.7 million) and foreigners (2.4 million) fell in August, with 1.5 and 5.0 percent drops respectfully.
FSO revealed the cumulative amount of nocturnal hotel stays in the confederation reached 25.2 million by the end of August, a 0.5-percent decrease compared to the same period last year.
Over half (14 million) of these stays were accounted for by foreigners, with the remaining 11.2 million generated by the autochthonous population.
FSO highlighted that the number of Europeans staying overnight in Swiss establishments recorded a 15.2-percent decrease in August 2015, with the sharpest drop attributed to the number of German nationals visiting the country (minus 20.2 percent).
Those staying in the confederation and hailing from Asia on the other hand registered a 12.8-percent increase.
A total of 58,000 additional nocturnal stays, representing a 38.2 percent increase, were generated by Chinese citizens in August, the biggest rise in terms of country of origin, FSO revealed. Endit
