Backgrounder: Medal-receiving WWII veterans at HK commemoration

The following are the veterans who received medals at a grand commemoration marking the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the recovery of sovereignty over Taiwan held here Monday:
Chao Xiangling, born in 1922 in Hong Kong, was a soldier of the Dongjiang Column led by the Communist Party of China (CPC). She started to work as an intelligence and communications officer in 1939 and later fought as a guerrilla in Lantau Island, Hong Kong.
Wu Hon-nang, born in 1914 in Guangdong Province, entered the Whampoa Military Academy at the age of 19. As a pilot, he went through three aircraft accidents. During the Xi'an Incident of December 1936, he assisted CPC representatives - Zhou Enlai, Zhu De and Ye Jianying, in transferring to Nanjing for negotiations.
Wong Lap-kwong, born in 1933 in Hong Kong, was a soldier of the Dongjiang Column. He joined the CPC-led guerrillas in 1942 and participated in the rescue of U.S. pilot Donald W. Kerr in 1944.
Lee Fook-kei, born in 1921, had been a soldier of the Royal Hong Kong Regiment (The Volunteers) before joining the Kuomintang- led troop. He took part in the Battle of Hong Kong.
Chung Wai-kin, born in 1926 in Hong Kong, was a soldier of the Dongjiang Column. He took part in the mission to assist in the withdrawal of the Dongjiang Column from Hong Kong to the Chinese mainland in 1945.
Chan Ping-ching, born in 1918, is the only living Chinese pilot out of 12 in the Flying Tigers.
Lee Kwai, born in 1926 in Hong Kong, joined the Dongjiang Column in 1942 and worked first as an orderly, then as a gunner and ammunition specialist.
Ng Wai, born in 1925, joined the Kuomintang-led troop in 1941. She was later promoted to the rank of major.
Pang Chit, born in 1929 in Malaysia, was a soldier of the Dongjiang Column. She joined the column at the age of 13 and later worked as a nurse.
Lam Chun, born in 1935, was a soldier of the Dongjiang Column. She joined the column at the age of eight. Endi
