Two soldiers killed in PKK explosion in SE Turkey

Xinhua, September 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

Two soldiers of the Turkish security forces were killed and two others wounded in an explosion detonated by militants of the banned Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) in southeastern Turkey on Tuesday, said a Turkish military statement.

The explosives placed by PKK rebels exploded against an armored vehicle on Tuhi Bridge in Semdinli town of Hakkari province on Tuesday afternoon, said the statement released by the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday that the Turkish military killed more than 30 PKK members in a cross-border operation into northern Iraq overnight, adding that "we'll not stop, but continue (military operations)."

Erdogan said the Turkish military has killed more than 2,000 PKK members in both domestic and cross border operations since July.

Two police officers were killed on Monday evening in a gun attack in the town of Seyhan in southern Adana province, local governor Mustafa Buyuk was quoted as saying by private Dogan News Agency on Tuesday.

Last Thursday and Friday, two Turkish soldiers and 34 PKK militants were killed in clashes in eastern Turkish province of Sirnak, according to Turkey's General Staff headquarters.

Tensions have soared in Turkey as the government launched a major military operation against PKK militants, while the latter has kept hitting back since a ceasefire fell apart in July.

The PKK is designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and the United States. Endit
