Vietnam reports surge in dengue fever cases in first 9 months

Vietnam reported some 32, 900 dengue fever patients in the first nine months of this year, including 18 fatalities, compared with the respective figures of 18,800 and 15 in the same period last year, the country's General Statistics Office said Tuesday.
In September alone, Vietnam saw over 10,000 cases of dengue fever infections, including 6 fatalities.
Between January and September, the country also reported over 29,000 infection cases of hand-foot-mouth disease including 4 fatalities; 720 cases of viral encephalitis, including 21 fatalities; and 289 cases of typhoid.
Vietnam currently has 228,500 HIV carriers, of whom 78,700 have become AIDS patients, the office said, adding that 79,900 AIDS patients have died as of Sept. 17 since the first HIV case was reported in the country in December 1990. Endi
