Israel arrests 4 Palestinians for deadly stone-throwing attack

Xinhua, September 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Israel said Saturday it has arrested four Palestinian youths in connection with a stone-throwing attack that led to the death of an Israeli driver in Jerusalem last week.

The Israeli Shin Bet security service said in a statement that the four suspects, aged 16 to 19, are residents of the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sur Baher.

Last Sunday, on the Jewish New Year's Eve, they allegedly hurled stones at passing vehicles near a Jewish neighborhood in East Jerusalem.

According to a statement by the police, the stone-throwing "led to a self-inflicted accident," as the 64-year-old Alexander Levlovich (64) lost control of his car and crashed into a pole. He died of his wounds in hospital

The announcement of the arrest came two days after the Israeli cabinet approved harsher measures against Palestinian stone throwers, including wider rules of engagement and higher minimum penalties.

Stone-throwing incidents have become an almost daily occurrence amidst clashes between Israeli police and Palestinian youths in the flashpoint al-Aqsa mosque compound in East Jerusalem. Endit
