UN chief announces 25-bln-dollar commitment to women, children health

nited Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced on Saturday more than 25 billion U.S. dollars in commitments to helping end preventable deaths of women, children and adolescents by 2030.
Ban made the announcement at a launch event of the Global Strategy for Women's, Children's and Adolescents' Health, a roadmap aimed at supporting the health and well-being of women, children and adolescents.
"We have shown that our partnership can yield concrete results. I, and the entire UN system, remain dedicated to saving and improving the lives of the most vulnerable amongst us," Ban said.
The commitments are expected to grow significantly in the coming years, and include new policies and groundbreaking partnerships from 40 countries and over 100 international organizations, philanthropic foundations, UN agencies, civil society and the private sector.
Pledges include contributions from the United States, Canada, Sweden, Germany, and Norway, among other donor countries.
According to the World Health Organization, some 800 women died each day in 2013 from complications of pregnancy or childbirth. Worldwide, women and children are 14 times more likely to die in a disaster than men. Enditem
