13 killed as gunmen attack communities near Nigeria's oil hub

Xinhua, September 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least 13 people were killed when gunmen launched fresh attack on two communities near Nigeria's oil hub city of Port Harcourt, capital of the southeastern state of Rivers, locals said Friday.

Several others were injured in the attack on early Thursday as the gunmen went on rampage in Obrikom and Omoku communities in Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni district of the oil-rich province, Paul Anselm, a survivor, said.

State police spokesman Ahmad Mohammed confirmed the incident to Xinhua but declined to give any official figure of casualties. The police officer said due to ongoing investigation, the actual figure of those killed was conflicting.

Some eight people were first killed in Obrikom community before the gang proceeded to the nearby Omoku community to further unleash terror on the residents, local authorities said, adding five people were killed at the latter community, as the attack snowballed to mid-day.

Investigators are yet to unravel the cause of the attack and those behind it. Endit
