Slovakia expects the European Union to assume a joint position on the emissions scandal at car producer Volkswagen (VW), Slovak Transport, Construction and Development Minister Jan Pociatek said Thursday.
"These are the things where we wait for a more extensive synchronization within EU because we consider this to be a joint problem," he added.
"It would be illogical for us to act in a manner incongruent with the rest of Europe. So we'll wait for the next steps of both the European Commission and EU, and see what the next avenue of approach will be," said Pociatek.
The VW emission scandal emerged last week, when U.S. Environment Protection Agency announced that automobiles with diesel VW engines used software that enabled to falsify the real values of toxic emissions. According to latest information, the case applies to 11 million cars worldwide.
Since 1991, VW Slovakia has produced more than 4 million automobiles in Slovakia, making it among the largest employers, exporters and investors in the country. It provides jobs to 9,900 employees. Enditem
