German business climate index edges upwards in September

Xinhua, September 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Ifo Business Climate Index for industry and trade in Germany rose to 108.5 points in September from a revised value of 108.4 points in August, the Ifo institute reported here on Thursday.

The climate index in manufacturing continued to deteriorate slightly, while the indicator in trade, both wholesaling and retailing, and in construction brightened. The business climate in construction turned positive for the first time since January 2014, the Munich-based think tank reported.

According to Ifo, although companies assessed their current business situation slightly less favourably than in August, they expressed greater optimism about future business developments.

"The German economy is proving robust," Ifo president Hans-Werner Sinn said.

The Ifo Business Climate Index, considered the most important barometer for the German economy, is based on about 7,000 monthly survey responses from firms in manufacturing, construction, wholesaling and retailing. Endit
