Hungary starts building fence on border with Croatia

Xinhua, September 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

Hungary has dispatched hundreds of soldiers and police officers to its border with Croatia and begun building a fence overnight, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Friday.

Since human traffickers have not given up and the flood of migrants has not declined, Hungary needs to expect a huge number of people on its southern borders, Orban announced over Radio Kossuth.

Hungary, he said, could not get any help from its neighbors and Western countries, which continued to criticize Hungary for what he called "suicidal liberalism."

He also described a border scuffle earlier this week between the Hungarian police and refugees as an act of terrorism.

Thousands of people from the Middle East and Africa have gathered to camps in front of two border crossings, closed since Monday midnight, between Hungary and Serbia.

On Wednesday, Hungarian riot police fired tear gas and water cannons at protesting refugees trying to enter the country at the border with Serbia. Endi
