Mozambique's main opposition says to "politically" revenge attack on its leader

Xinhua, September 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

Mozambique's main opposition party Renamo has said it is to take revenge for an allegedly assassination attempt on its leader, Afonso Dhlakama, in a political way.

Dhalakama was reported to have survived an ambush by gunmen on his motorcade last Saturday night in the central Manica province injuring four Renamo men.

Renamo accused the government of being behind the attack -- charges denid by the ruling Frelimo party.

At a press conference in Maputo on Thursday, General Secretary of Renamo, Manuel Bissopo, said the party would "seriously react to the ambush" as "this kind of state terrorism cannot be tolerated."

Bissopo however noted "this is not a declaration of war" as they will "react politically and intelligently."

He said he believed the order to assassinate Dhlakama came from President Filipe Nyusi.

Police say they are investigating the attack, while Frelimo has accused Renamo of not cooperating in the probe. Enditem
